ARTSY. TECHY. PEN+INKY.

Award-winning artist Dr. Keren Lowenstein (affectionately known as Dr. KLo) specializes in intricate pen + ink illustrations. Primarily self-taught, she has refined her art practice through adult education courses at Spiva Center for the Arts in Joplin, MO + at the Kansas City Art Institute. By juxtaposing high-contrast illustrations with complex technological motifs, she creates a unique window into the world where the mechanical meets the natural. Based in Joplin, Dr. KLo shares her life with her wife + a lively pack of four dogs + one cat. Her artistic presence extends from the galleries in Kansas City + Joplin + across social media.
My work exists at the intersection of technical discipline + DIY punk culture. Utilizing the rigid precision of drafting tools + technical pens alongside the fluid depth of ink + gouache, I construct high-contrast environments that demand a slower pace of observation.
While my aesthetic is rooted in the subversive energy of punk, my structural influences are drawn from the impossible geometries of M.C. Escher + the rhythmic, atmospheric line-work of Japanese woodblock prints alongside the surrealism of Dalí + the emotive textures of Van Gogh. My art practice uses analog tools to build immersive, hand-drawn realities.Through these intricate designs, I aim to create a bridge between my meticulous process + the viewer's personal history. Ultimately, my practice is a commitment to the present moment—an invitation to find joy in the details + a means of fostering a more vibrant, supportive arts community.

I launched my design studio in 1996, fueled by an art contrst win + a lifelong passion for the elegance of pen + ink. As a former art educator, nothing brings me more joy than sparking that same enthusiasm in others-whether you’re here to admire a finished piece, dive into the creative process, or discover the specialized tools that make this medium so unique.

I craft high-contrast, hand-drawn escapes for the insiders, outsiders, + the glorious purveyors of the punk aesthetic in between. Using pen, ink + gouache, I build detailed worlds that demand the viewer’s full attention—a visual sanctuary for those looking to lose the world + find themselves in the line work.
